Machine Guns- The machine gun was a major improvement in technology during the war. It only needed four to six men to keep them running, and needed to be on a flat surface. They were more efficient then other large guns on the field because they needed twelve men to make them work. The more improved machine guns could fire 600 bullets per minute, and had the fire power of 100 guns.
Poison Gas- The first battle to use poisonous gas was at the battle of Ypres. In 1915 the Germans were the first to use the poisonous gas chlorine at Ypres. This gas caused burning in the throat and terrible chest pain. The death was very painful because you would eventually just suffocate. The danger with using poisonous gas is that the wind must be blowing the right way or the gas could end up killing your own men. Another deadly gas was Mustard gas which was the most deadly gas used. It was a colorless gas that would be shot into the trenches with shells. The effects from Mustard gas were blistering skin, vomiting, sore eyes, internal and external bleeding. It took twelve hours for to notice the effects of the gas, and the death was very slow taking up to 5 weeks.
Tanks and Armored Cars- Tanks were designed to be able to cross no mans land and were first used during World War 1 at the battle of Somme. The first tank was called the "Little Willie". The first tank only needed three men to run it and move at very slow speeds of 3 mph, and it was unable to cross trenches. The more developed tank was made at the end of the war with a turning turret on top, could carry 10 men, and reach speeds of 4 mph.

Airplanes- Planes were also used for war purposes for the first time during the World War 1. They were first used to drop bombs, spy, and help the men firing canons on the ground aim better. Later they had machine guns mounted on them and fought their enemy planes in the air. These fights became known as "Dog Fights".
Submarines/Torpedoes- German submarines were called U-boats, and they used them to sink ships carrying supplies from the United States to Britain. The passenger liner the Lusitania was hit by a torpedo from the Germans on May 1, 1915 which sank and caused 1,195 deaths. This caused the Americans to be angry at the Germans and join the war in 1917 on the allies side.
